Roberto Is Doing It Again
2009 Grapplers Quest All-Star Pro Challenge Heavyweight FINALS battle between Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu and Vinicius "Pezao" Magalhaes on June 27th, 2009.
Update August, September, October
Despite feeling burned out I want to keep track of the last two months most important events in my training. So here are the highlights I didn’t write about at the time they happened.
In chronological order:
August: Visit at FightZone Malmö
I paid a visit to my old friend Stephan Seidl and his macho-boys...

... and as always the pleasure was on my side....

I learned two techniques, a sweep from half guard and one from De LaRiva Guard. I also admired Stephan’s toys.

August 15th: Robson's and Viveca's wedding
My instructor married with Viveca. Beautiful couple, great wedding.

Casa de piatra!
September 6th: Gothenburg Open
I messed up. I was supposed to compete in the -64 kg class but I missed the weight with 400grams. I was so dehydrated that I wasn’t able to lose the last grams. Therefore I just looked at other people fighting.

Then I ate a healthy lubch like everybody else :)

and a healthy dinner in the evening at home.

September 17th and 18th: Belt Exams
On Thursday Glenn, Calle and Johnny graduated to brown belt. Well deserved!

On Friday several people got their blue belts. Congratulations again for everybody.

September 19th: Kaisho Camp - Seminar Ricardo Carvalho and Alain Sailly
Time again for our own annual autumn camp. We had lots of fun with Ricardo Carvalho, Robson’s instructor from Brazil and Alain Sailly a jiu-jitsu master from France.

Amazing instructors, very pedagogic al presentation of techniques and very nice persons.

As usual I took pictures with the instructors

Mauro, Glenn, Robson, myself and Ricardo
(Mauro is a BJJ black belt and a friend of Robson and he will be in Sweden for a longer time)

Me and Alain
September 29th: Cauliflower Ear
I had problems with one of my ears for a while and now it was time to do something about it.

I like my ears in their original shape so from now on I will have ear protection during training.
October 1st & 2nd: Seminar Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu
After ADCC in Barcelona and a seminar in Paris, Roberto came to visit us for a seminar. What a great guy he is an amazing instructor! I will try to write more about the seminar in a longer post.

Arriving to Helsingborg

Burned Out?

Since I came back from the States this summer I really didn’t feel like writing that much on the blog. Many times I thought “I need to write this, I need to write that, I need to put these pictures on the blog, I need to upload this video on Youtube”, but for some reason I don’t… Maybe I’m burned out.
What is Jiu Jitsu?
I just picked up this definition of Jiu Jitsu from Felipe Costa:

He was quoting his friend Fernando Lopes, from Merida, Mexico.
Pressure... Anxiety...

I’m starting to feel some pressure… actually a lot of pressure. There are only a few days left before October. In October there will be two years since I started the blog and declared my goal – somewhere in-between October 2007 and the end of October 2009 I will compete in a BJJ competition in Brazil.
.So now I’m sitting here with my anxiety after discovering that the Pan-American Championship will start on 22nd of October in Salvador, Bahia. It seems a little bit unrealistic to just decide so quickly to take this chance but it is not impossible. Actually, if I had the money right now, I would buy the tickets immediately.
Another alternative is to give myself a little more time and to compete in November in the South American Championship. It will give me some more time for preparation and to put together my budget. But according to my instructor Pan American is a more important competition.

Am I Turning Into a Fanatic?
.jpg)
For some days ago I was sitting on the train on my way to work. As usually I had my eyes closed and visualized some BJJ techniques. Suddenly I realized that BJJ is on my mind daily for several minutes at a time. I not only train almost daily but when I’m not training, working or spending time with my family I am thinking about BJJ and my training. I recognized the pattern from my teenage years when Karate was all I had in my head. So the next thing in my mind was the question: “Am I turning into a fanatic?”
A fanatic is “a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal, as in religion or politics.” Synonyms are “enthusiast, zealot, bigot, hothead, militant. Fanatic, zealot, militant, devotee refer to persons showing more than ordinary support for, adherence to, or interest in a cause, point of view, or activity. Fanatic and zealot both suggest excessive or overweening devotion to a cause or belief. Fanatic further implies unbalanced or obsessive behavior” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fanatic)
According to Wikipedia, “Fanaticism is an emotion of being filled with excessive, uncritical zeal, particularly for an extreme religious or political cause or in some cases sports, or with an obsessive enthusiasm for a pastime or hobby. Philosopher George Santayana defines fanaticism as "redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim"[1]; according to Winston Churchill, "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject". By either description the fanatic displays very strict standards and little tolerance for contrary ideas or opinions.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanaticism)

About This Blogg
This blogg is all about how I work to fulfil one of my dreams. Two years from now (October 2007 – October 2009) I will compete in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competition in Brazil. It is not my dream to win the first prize (though it would be nice to do that) but just to be good enough so that I can compete in a Brazilian competition. I trained martial arts before and I am a black belt in Ashihara Karate but I am a beginner in BJJ. I am 35 years old now when I start this project, I have a family and a job and I’m not in my best shape right now (October 2007). This blogg will let you know how I manage all these aspects of my life and it will also keep me on track… I hope. If you want you can keep me company on my way to Brazil.
